Kiwanis Seed Project

The Kiwanis Club West Seattle is giving out about 200 packs of seeds to people at the Sunday Farmers’ Market so that they can grow vegetables and flower plants in their garden. This will enable people to grow fresh vegetables to boost their health, while the flowers add color and beauty to your household.

This Kiwanis Seed Project was initiated by a parent in West Seattle who has given seeds to local schools for over 16 years, in West Seattle: Gatewood, Fairmount Park, Sanislo, Our Lady of Guadalupe and Denny Middle School, and Thurgood Marshall, and If your school wants to participate, please let us know.

The Kiwanis Club wants to especially thank John Potratz, West Seattle Nursey, and Territorial Seeds for support, donations, guidance.

Growing plants can also be a big boost to family fun and emotion. Many parents have mentioned sharing the fun of growing a garden with their children or grandchildren, and the kids get to enjoy watching seeds germinating out of the ground into plants and then growing into something that they can eat or admire. For younger kids (3 to 8), we recommend that you consider spinach and radishes since they are fast growing and are good to eat. Also, growing plants is an educational experience with hands on activity!  As the plant grows you can transplant it to your garden.  Radishes grow fast and will not like being transplanted, spinach grows and loves to be transplanted. Growing plants should be a big boost to your family fun. If you need a pot in which to plant it, then we have a limited number today.
